The television program “Haft” (Seven), produced by Channel 3 of IRIB, is a show that examines Iranian and world cinema issues. This program, which is broadcast recorded, airs every Friday night on Channel 3. “Haft” invites Iranian artists, critics, and cultural officials in the field of cinema and television to talk, criticize, analyze, and review films and cinema. The new series of this program is broadcast on Namayesh channel, hosted by Behrouz Afkhami
The initial idea for creating such a program, which was supposed to be similar to the sports program “90,” but in the field of culture and art, was presented by Fereydoun Jeyrani to the social group of Channel 3 and was welcomed by the then director. At that time, Hamid Pendashteh was the executive producer of this program, and Fereydoun Jeyrani was in charge of directing, producing, and hosting. Although the first episodes of this series faced a lot of criticism due to Jeyrani’s unusual hosting style and Masoud Farasati’s excessive criticisms, over time, it managed to attract a large audience and present an acceptable definition of itself. This program was suspended by IRIB managers in June 2012, and Jeyrani was removed from the top job. Fazlollah Shariatpanahi, director of the social group of Channel 3 of Iranian television, attributed the increased media criticism of Jeyrani’s statements in the programs leading up to that date and the repeated warnings from IRIB managers and Ezatollah Zarghami himself, as well as some media outlets to Jeyrani regarding his statements in this program, as effective factors in this change of host. Fereydoun Jeyrani attributed his departure to the start of a television series project, and later he himself attributed his removal to opposition to government cinema. Jeyrani’s “Haft” became more successful, more watched, and more talked about in the end by choosing the right journalistic approaches. Another positive point of Jeyrani’s era was giving equal opportunity to opponents and supporters to speak, which increased the number of Iranian television viewers. This period also faced criticisms, including issues with the set and program design, as well as the way the permanent critic of the program, Farasati, expressed and criticized
After Jeyrani’s dismissal, options such as Mohammad Khazaei and Nader Talebzadeh were considered to host the program. However, ultimately, Mahmoud Gabarloo, who had a history of cultural activities, including attending critique sessions at the Fajr Film Festival, took over the hosting of the program and aired the first episode of the new series of “Haft” on July 9, 2012. Also, the production of this series, which was initially assigned to Mohammad Khazaei, was handed over to Mohammad Gabarloo, a film press critic, after his resignation
After Fereydoun Jeyrani and Masoud Farasati were dismissed, and after a few months and criticisms that Gabarloo was not very successful in directing challenging discussions or that there was too much conservatism in his statements, among other accusations raised by some filmmakers and critics about his performance, Gabarloo was dismissed from his position in late August
However, in this period, negative points such as the neutrality of the program and positive points such as accepting the invitation of different groups of directors and critics can be mentioned, including the presence of Masoud Kimiai, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, and Shahab Hosseini. Also, Changiz Jalilvand from the dubbing and voice acting community attended this program, which was unprecedented in this program, and no other dubber has been invited to “Haft” so far
Haft, continued its work with the previous trend for three years, but this program did not last for Gabarloo either. With the change in the management of the IRIB organization and, consequently, various channels, whispers of change and transformation were also heard in “Haft.” The three-week suspension of the program intensified the rumors, but Mahmoud Gabarloo attributed the suspension to religious occasions and said that from the second month of summer, the program would continue its work with more strength. He even complained about the spread of rumors about his change and said: “In recent days, I have heard rumors and I am complaining to some media friends who spread these rumors without following up on the issue. It is expected that media people will use knowledge beyond yellow topics to criticize a cinema analysis program and not get involved in yellow media topics.” But the yellow media topics were real, especially when Gholamreza Mirhosseini, the then director of Channel 3, said in an interview that changes in “Haft” were inevitable: “Changes in the programs of this channel are inevitable, especially changes in the content of “Haft,” which, according to the new approach of Channel 3 of IRIB based on entertainment, fun, and competition, some of our programs will definitely change.” Speculations began, and many names were mentioned for hosting “Haft,” from Farzad Hasani to the return of Fereydoun Jeyrani and names such as Mohammadreza Shahidi Fard, Mansour Zabetian, and Akbar Nabavi. Of course, these speculations were not limited to hosting “Haft,” but the editorship of this program also became a topic of much discussion in the media. While most opinions were based on handing over the reins of this program to a filmmaker such as Mohammadreza Sharifinia, Mohammad Hossein Latifi, Rasoul Sadr Ameli, or Behrouz Afkhami, others mentioned different names such as Javad Shamghadri and Hassan Abbasi. Finally, Gabarloo’s departure from the program was confirmed, and finally, among all the options that were considered for hosting and editorship of “Haft,” a final name was chosen, and at the end, Behrouz Afkhami, a well-known film director, was chosen as the host and director of “Haft.” With Afkhami’s coming to power, the type of work and style of “Haft” programs changed significantly. The structural and set variety and fundamental changes in its framework, with Behrouz Afkhami at the center, have no resemblance to its two previous programs. New sections such as separating the interview, film critique and screening, book introduction, film introduction, panel discussion, report and world cinema box office, introduction of on-stage theaters, cinema competition with prizes, and photo novel section are among the most important items of Afkhami’s “Haft.” With the start of this series of “Haft,” the program initially faced a positive reaction from viewers and filmmakers, but this event soon faded, and “Haft,” with Afkhami as the host and producer and with Farasati as the permanent critic, faced reactions from critics and filmmakers
Finally, Behrouz Afkhami, considering the expiration of his two-year contract with the IRIB organization, after holding a meeting with the organization’s managers on this matter, refused to continue cooperating with the program. He said in this regard
“At that meeting, I told the managers that I want to go and make my feature film. Because I think I have said everything I had to say, and I have achieved what I wanted in “Haft”
From February 2, 2018, coinciding with the 36th Fajr Film Festival, the fourth series of “Haft” was broadcast on Channel 3 of IRIB, hosted by Reza Rashidpour, and ended on February 11
From January 30, 2019, coinciding with the 37th Fajr Film Festival, the fifth series of “Haft” was broadcast on Channel 3 of IRIB, hosted by Mohammad Hossein Latifi. In this period of the program, unlike the previous series, Masoud Farasati returned to the program, and a critique table was held with Farasati as the permanent host-expert and other guest critics such as Saeed Qotbizadeh and Mohammad Taghi Fahim. In the items and out-of-studio interviews section, Mohammad Peyvandi was the host. The cinema program “Haft” is broadcast every week on Channel 3 of IRIB. The last episode of this series aired on March 13, 2021, and no new episode of the program was broadcast until November 27, 2021. However, finally, on this date, a new episode aired
