Tatsuya Nakadai, the charismatic actor and enduring icon of Japanese cinema, who gained global fame for his historic collaborations with great directors like Akira Kurosawa and Masaki Kobayashi, has passed away at the age of 92
According to a statement released by the Mumeijuku acting and theatre school, which he himself founded, Nakadai died on Saturday, November 8, 2025 (corresponding to 18 Aban $1404), due to Pneumonia at a hospital in Tokyo
Nakadai, who starred in over 160 films throughout his seven-decade career, was comparable only to Toshiro Mifune as the most prominent male star of 20th-century Japanese cinema. Unlike Mifune, who often played rough heroes, Nakadai portrayed a wide range of characters, from tragic heroes to insane villains, with emotional depth and a powerful presence
Nakadai always considered himself a theatre actor first. To retain freedom in collaborating with various directors, he refused to sign exclusive contracts with major film studios
In 1975, he founded the Mumeijuku acting school and continued to train a new generation of actors and perform classic plays in the theatre until the final years of his life
