The Iranian theater community has lost one of its pillars. Hadi Marzban, the renowned director, writer, and artist, passed away at the age of 81. The distinguished director, who dedicated a large part of his artistic life to the stage, died in the hospital’s intensive care unit due to a critical physical condition after several days of hospitalization
Marzban’s passing has plunged the art community, especially theater professionals, into mourning and serves as a reminder of the valuable legacy he leaves behind
Hadi Marzban was born in the year 1323 SH (1944 AD) and began his professional activities in theater and television during the 1960s and 1970s. After completing his academic studies in acting and directing, Marzban continued his artistic path by focusing on committed and literary theater
By establishing the Hafez Theater Group, he became a prolific and consistent director, maintaining a serious and continuous presence on the main stages of Iranian theater for over half a century. Marzban succeeded in creating a deep connection between literature and the stage through successful adaptations of works by great Iranian and international writers
A significant portion of Hadi Marzban’s fame and reputation is owed to his long-standing and brilliant collaborations with Akbar Radi, the great Iranian playwright. He staged nearly all of Radi’s plays, and was effectively considered the principal interpreter of Akbar Radi’s works on the stage
Some of the most prominent plays directed by Hadi Marzban include
“Ay Ba Kolah, Ay Bi Kolah”
“Payeen, Gozar Saqqakhaneh”
“Melody-e Shahr-e Barani”
“Khorshid-e Shab”
“Shab Rooye Sangfarsh-e Khis”
“Doctor Faustus”
He also acted in famous television series like Mirza Koochak Khan-e Jangali and Sarbedaran, although his primary focus always remained on theater direction
As a teacher and artistic manager, Marzban played a key role in the survival of theater and the training of new generations. He consistently advocated for quality and authenticity on stage, defending theater as an independent, culture-building institution
Although his death at the age of 81 marks the end of a fruitful era, his legacy, in the form of recorded performances and the actors who emerged from his school, will continue to live on
The IIMDB.IR/en website extends its deepest condolences to the respected Marzban family and the entire Iranian art community
