The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the ambitious project of George Lucas (creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones) and his wife, Mellody Hobson, has finally announced its official opening date. The museum is set to open its doors to the public in Los Angeles in September 2026
Constructed at an estimated cost of $1 billion, the museum focuses on Narrative Art (visual storytelling) and is not intended to be merely a cinematic museum
The museum’s permanent collection, which forms its heart, includes over 100,000 art objects, many of which were gathered from George Lucas’s personal collection
For the grand opening in September 2026, the museum is set to host several exhibitions on diverse subjects, including the history of illustration and major works by cinema’s visual artists
Alongside the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Lucas Museum will transform Los Angeles into a major hub for the exhibition and preservation of cinematic history and narrative arts. The museum’s focus on visual storytelling will play a key role in educating future generations of artists and filmmakers
